Water Underneath a Dishwasher Can Cause Major Damage in Akron, Ohio

Water from a dishwasher can cause major water damage

A dishwasher is a staple appliance in most homes in Akron, Ohio. It saves us time from not having to wash dishes, glasses and cooking items by hand. Sometimes, you may even start the dishwasher before leaving your house to run errands. You may then come home to find that your kitchen is full of water.

Dishwashers have a seal that keeps the water inside the tub, but you can have a slow leak in the joints of the supply water line that runs the dishwasher or in the drain line beneath and after time the leak has caused mold to grow.  Since, the dishwasher is under the counter-tops and between cabinets overtime the water can do severe damage to the sub-floor, walls and cabinets. If water is still present, then the water needs to be cleaned up and dried out. If mold is seen that mold remediation may need to be done.

Your dishwasher leak can cause water damage and the following may need to be repaired or even replaced:

  • Tile
  • Wood
  • Laminate
  • Electrical wiring
  • Drywall
  • Wallpaper
  • Paint

The moment you notice your dishwasher is or has leaked, make sure to first turn off the dishwasher. If you find water on the floor use a towel or mop to clean it up, you might need to pull out your dishwasher to get any water that has pooled beneath the dishwasher itself. Calling a local water restoration company like SERVPRO of West Akron is recommended to make sure the water you don’t see is also dried up to ensure that you don’t have any moisture in your floorboards, which can quickly develop mold.

Why Choose SERVPRO of West Akron for Water Damage Cleanup and Restoration?

8/8/2019 (Permalink)

Our office staff, Tracy and Rhonda, will answer your call and dispatch our water clean up crews.

A water disaster can happen any time of day or night. Our company operates 24 hours a day – 365 days a year. Our staff is highly trained in IICRC standards for emergency water clean up and restoration. Each water damage is different, and our team understands what is happening and what needs to be done. After discussing the situation an estimator will be dispatched to your home or business to begin the mitigation process.

Our crews understand using the proper equipment makes a difference in properly and efficiently drying down your structure to reduce time and expense. Scoping the area of the water damage involves locating all the areas of the structure into which water has intruded. They will also determine how much moisture has been absorbed into the structure and the contents in the home. The crews use detection devices such as:

Moisture Sensors are used to detect moistures in carpets and carpet padding.

Moisture Meters are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. SERVPRO crews use this meter to test the moisture in daily until there is no moisture detected and the area has been dried completely.

Thermo-hygrometers measure both temperature and relative humidity. Capturing these two readings and using a psychrometric chart it will calculate specific humidity, dew point and vapor moisture.

Infrared Cameras can identify the location and extent of moisture in walls very effectively.

Manometers are used to measure the difference in air pressure when creating a negative air pressure environment.

After the crews have determined the areas that have been affected by water using the different detection equipment the clean up process begins.

Water Damage Restoration Costs to Cleanup in Stow, Ohio

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage to a basement in Stow, Ohio.

You go down to your basement and find that you have two inches of standing water. You start to panic wondering how much will this cost? Unfortunately, water damage is an expensive expense. It is important to have insurance to cover these expenses, but if your water damage isn’t covered below are the factors that will determine the cost. An article in the home.costhelper.com/water-damage gives a detailed description on how much it might cost:

  • The cost of water damage restoration is based on several factors. These include the size of the affected area, the extent of the damage, the materials and water type. There are three categories -- the least expensive to clean up is category 1, which is clean water from a faucet or supply pipe. Category 2 is gray wastewater with minor contaminants, such as overflow from a dishwasher or washing machine. Category 3 is black water, containing sewage or other toxic debris.
  • Fixing a small area of water damage in a ceiling due to a leaky roof can be $100-$300 to patch the sheet rock, or $30-$50 for do-it-yourself materials -- not including the cost of fixing the roof and repainting the ceiling.
  • Drying a flooded basement can cost $500-$10,000 or more, depending on the size of the basement, the depth of the flooding and the water type (clean, gray wastewater or black/toxic). See How Much Does a Flooded Basement Cost. Depending on where the appliance is located in the house, cleaning up after a faulty water heater, washing machine, dishwasher or air conditioner averages about $5,000, according to HomeOwnerNet.com.
  • Damage from a burst water pipe can cost $5,000-$70,000 or more with an average insurance claim costing $15,000.
  • If an entire house is flooded with storm water, the National Flood Insurance Program provides a flood damage simulator[2] to predict the total cost based on the height of the water. For 1-4 inches of water, the estimated cost is $7,800. For 9-12 inches, the estimate is $18,930. At 18 inches, the estimated cost is $26,285.

Water damage might be covered by insurance. Flood insurance typically covers damage from a natural disaster, when outside water or mud overflows an otherwise dry house. Homeowners insurance does not cover floods but may cover water damage caused by minor individualized disasters, such as a hailstorm smashing a window or a broken water pipe spewing water, these items are usually covered as long as the problem wasn't caused by a lack of standard maintenance. As always, coverage for a loss under an insurance claim would be determined by your insurance adjuster.

Our team of professionals at SERVPRO of West Akron will be able to assist in your restoration of any water damage – 24 hours a day! Give us a call today with any questions you might have at 330-867-5723 or visit our website at www.SERVPROwestakron.com.

Water Damage Caused by Clogged Gutters in Akron, Ohio

6/11/2019 (Permalink)

Water Damage to a ceiling from a roof leak caused by clogged gutters in Akron, Ohio.

The importance of cleaning your gutters when it comes to water damage to your home in Akron, Ohio.

The reason we have gutters on our home is to collect the rainwater from the roof and divert it away from our house saving us from possible water or mold damage to the exterior or interior of homes. It is important to check your gutters during the Spring and Fall months to see if the seasonal elements have destroyed or clogged your gutters. Below are tips to help make sure you avoid the possibilities of future water or mold disasters.

  • Replacing gutters on older homes: If you live in an historic home with older style gutters than replacing them maybe needed. Older style gutters are made up of segments that are joined together at seams and attached to the fascia with screws. These seams and openings collect water that can’t easily escape, encouraging the growth of mold that can spread to the fascia and roof.
  • Steeped pitched roof – If you live in a home that has a steeply pitched roof during very heavy rainfall the gutters on the home can’t handle the volume of the water flow. The excessive water flow can damage your outside deck, patio or even foundation. It is important to inspect these gutters regularly to make sure they aren’t clogged or replacing them with larger higher-capacity gutters.
  • Clogged gutters – If you have mature trees of any kind then most likely your gutters will become clogged with leaves, sticks, pine needles and…..Cleaning these gutters out with a leaf blower, wet vacuum, gutter scoop, power washer or even by hand will help prevent the flow of water down the spout and flowing over the gutter onto the fascia and causing possible water damage to the foundation.
  • Seasonal Storms – Heavy Spring storms bring rain, hail, or windstorms that can crack gutters or send leaves, twigs, or longer branches from nearby trees into gutters. This debris can then decompose in the gutter and slow or completely block the normal flow of water away from your home causing water damage. For these reasons, it is prudent to inspect your gutter after every heavy storm, clearing out debris and sealing any holes with gutter caulk. During the winter months ice and snow can take a toll on gutters. The heavy amount of snow and ice rooftops can cause nearby gutters to crack or detach from the house, while ice dams can lead to leaks in your attic or ceiling as well as damage to the roof, gutters, or foundation.
