5 Things Not to Do After a Fire Damages Your Akron, Ohio Home

5/28/2023 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Home SERVPRO of West Akron restored this home in Akron, Ohio that had fire, smoke and water damage.

After a house fire your home will suffer from extensive fire, smoke, and water damage. In the aftermath of a fire, no matter the size, it is important to know what not to do. After the fire department has gone, it is best to hire a professional restoration company to board up your structure and begin the cleanup process. As a homeowner you do not want to cause further damage or not properly restore your damaged contents or structure. SERVPRO of West Akron can assist with restoring all your damaged possessions and property back to preloss condition.

You or your restoration company should contact your insurance agent or insurance company immediately to report the fire loss and begin the claim process. A lot of this information is included in the fire report. You can obtain a copy from your local fire department. The information needed to file the claim:

  • Date and time of fire
  • Location
  • Cause of fire (if known)
  • Amount of damage done to the structure and/or its contents

Take pictures of the fire damage. A fire is overwhelming, but the sooner you can photograph everything before there is further damage or personal items are removed. As soon as the fire department allows you to enter, take as many pictures of the property as possible.

A house fire can be devastating and feel overwhelming. Below are 5 things NOT to do after a fire:

  1. Depending on the extent of the fire damage it may not be safe to stay in your home. There are many factors to consider after a house fire that could make your home dangerous. The structure of the house may be unstable, exterior might be at risk of collapsing, asbestos contamination, or live electrical lines.
  2. Do not throw away anything. A restoration company will examine clothing, bedding, carpets, or other household goods. Some of your personal items retain their value after they have been salvaged and restored. Do not throw anything away without consulting your insurance adjuster. You might be tossing away something that is needed to prove your claim, such as photos and receipts. The adjuster may take your word for certain items (furniture, appliances, etc.) but will probably want to see invoices or receipts for the cost of others.
  3. Do not repair or replace anything until you have written permission from your homeowners’ insurance company. Your insurance company should already be familiar with the extent of damage to your home, but it is important that they authorize any repairs before you begin work. If it is not approved your insurance company could deny payment for restoration services
  4. Do not cancel any of your utility services. Your restoration company will need to use them while repairs are being done, be sure you are current on all bills and that no deposits are required before service is restored.
  5. Do not wash any clothes or other items made with fabric materials in a normal washing machine or take it to the dry cleaners without expert advice. These items are likely to need specialist smoke removal treatment to extract all the toxic smoke from them. Washing the items yourself may embed the odor more into the fabric or even ruin your washing machine.

House Fire Prevention Tips to your Stow Ohio Home

8/22/2022 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Stove A fire caused severe damage in this Stow, Ohio kitchen.

Fires are unpredictable and seem to start from nowhere, causing damage to the home. Homeowners go to great lengths to avoid fires, but despite years of ad campaigns and awareness advertisements, more than 25% of all fires still occur in the home.

The top causes of house fires and how you can prevent them:

  • Cooking: Cooking leads the list as the top cause of home fires and injuries with very little causalities. Unattended cooking is the number one reason that is why almost half of all home fires start in the kitchen. To avoid Want to avoid a fire at home? Stay in the kitchen at the stove or grill while your food is being prepared.
  • Heating Appliances: Heating equipment is responsible for 14% of all home fires nationally. A combination of mishaps, equipment malfunctions and flammable materials placed too close to heat sources lead to this scenario, and portable space heaters are the top culprit.
  • Electrical Mishaps: Electrical safety has improved over the years as new technology is introduced and building codes are updated. While appliances and electrical devices in the home are generally more efficient and require less electricity, there are more of these devices in the home, driving up the usage of electricity. Faulty wiring and the overloading of circuits are factors that contribute to electrical fires at home. Other top causes are the use of frayed or faulty outlets and appliance cords or extension cords that are damaged.
  • Arson: Unfortunately, over 28,000 intentional home firesare started every year. Intentional home fires, or arson, still happens at an alarming rate. Some of the reasons are pyromania, crime concealment and vandalism.
  • Smoking/Vaping: According to the CDC, smoking has declined by two-thirdsin the past 50 years after the Surgeon General warned of health consequences. But tragically, despite only being responsible for 5% of home fire occurrences, fires started by smoking materials are the leading cause of civilian fire deaths.

Regardless of the cause of loss, SERVPRO West Akron is here for you if your home or business is affected by fire. Call the professional and knowledgeable team at 330-867-5723 to see how we can help.

4 Steps to Put Out a Kitchen Grease Fire in Akron, Ohio

9/8/2021 (Permalink)

Kitchen Pan Flames If you experience a grease fire in your home and you need emergency cleanup and restoration, please call SERVPRO of West Akron at 330-867-5723.

A grease fire can start quickly and spread rapidly if not extinguished. Cooking causes over 160,000 home structure fires, annually, and is considered the number one cause of home fires and home injuries. Of the 160,000 annual cooking fires, two-thirds (66%) started with the ignition of food or other cooking materials. Often, these fires are ignited by grease.

4 Steps to Put Out a Kitchen Grease Fire in Akron, Ohio

Cover Flames

The first thing you need to do is cover the flames. Use a metal pan lid or a cookie sheet to smother and extinguish the fire. If you put out the fire quickly, your home may not experience any fire damage.

Turn off Heat Source

Once, the flames are extinguished, turn off the heat source. Do not pull the pot from the stove until the flames are extinguished to avoid injury. You don’t want to risk injury from the hot grease or flames. Once, the flames are extinguished, if possible, move the pan from the hot burner.

Use Baking Soda

If you do not have a lid or sheet capable of covering the pot with the fire, use baking soda. Do not use water. Water may make the situation worse. Do not use flour, baking powder or other cooking powders that resemble baking soda or salt. They have a different chemical makeup and will not react like baking soda and may make the fire worse.

Use a Fire Extinguisher

If nothing seems to control the fire, consider using a fire extinguisher to reduce fire damage. However, you cannot use just any fire extinguisher. You need a class B fire extinguisher, always have one in your kitchen for essential fire prevention.

A grease fire is common, and it is controllable. However, if you do not act quickly, the fire can spread rapidly. Use the steps above to extinguish a stovetop fire. If you are not familiar with grease fires, or if you don't know how to use an extinguisher, contact your local fire department to ask for help.

SERVPRO® Cleanup & Restoration: Fire & Smoke Damage Restoration

Behavior of Smoke:

A fire loss can result in complex damages because of the unique behavior of smoke. A trained professional should survey the loss site to determine the extent to which fire, smoke, heat, and moisture impacted building materials and contents.

Experienced fire restoration professionals know that smoke can penetrate within cavities of the structure, causing hidden damage and odor. Their knowledge of building systems helps them investigate how far smoke damage may have spread.

Heat will Escape: Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.

Heat Rises: Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.

Different Types of Smoke:

The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

  • Wet Smoke (Plastic and Rubbery) – Low heat, smoldering pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
  • Dry Smoke (Paper and Wood) – Fast burning, high-temperature, heat rises therefore this smoke can rise faster.
  • Protein Fire Residue (Food/Meats) – Produced by evaporations of materials rather than from fire. Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Insurance companies may require you to provide documentation of ownership. This includes receipts, brand name, price, serial number, and a description. If you do not have access to receipts, then try to go through your bank statements or even find photographs in which the item is visible.

Salvageable Materials

It is important to remove any salvageable materials quickly after the fire. Soot and smoke can start deteriorating the unaffected items. The longer items stay secondary damage may occur which could create a complicated situation with insurance.

It is significant to contact the insurance company before any cleaning or restoration work begins. The insurance adjuster will provide a detailed scope of work that will be covered by insurance. If needed, you may need to rent a storage unit or pod to keep any possessions while the structure is being cleaned and rebuilt. Some restoration companies may pack out all the belongings to bring back to their warehouse to clean and store.

A fire can do significant damage to your structure and belongings, some that is irreversible. Consulting and hiring a restoration expert can help you determine if the items are salvageable or unsalvageable. SERVPRO of West Akron can determine if the items can be restored or need to be replaced. Our number one goal is to save anything we possibly can, and make it "Like it never even happened." A smoke detector that was in a fire in Akron, Ohio.

Did you know that house fires affect approximately 500,000 pets each year?

This statistic and tips are according to the American Fire Administration. A pet can easily start a house fire by accidentally knocking over a candle when left attended. They can also knock over halogen lamps and space heaters by a wagging tail or a curious cat. Puppies and kittens can chew and fry electrical cords that be a fire hazard. Here are a few ways to be prepared to keep your pets safe from fire dangers.

  • Install plenty of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.
  • Check your smoke and carbon dioxide detectors regularly and change their batteries at least twice a year.
  • Invest in monitored smoke detectors. A monitoring smoke detector will notify a fire department if a fire develops while you are away from your home.
  • Post stickers on your door and windows to alert fire fighters that there are pets in the household. Put information on these notes that describe how many and what kind of pets are living in the home.
  • Make sure your pets wear a collar with identification tags and have a microchip implanted. Taking these precautions can avoid the heartache of a lost pet during these times of chaos.
  • Create an evacuation plan for your family and pets. Make sure everyone in your family knows the escape routes.
  • Keep leashes, pet carriers and treats by an exit. You will need these to help evacuate your pets during a fire.

Unfortunately, we can never prevent or predict when and if a fire will happen, the most important thing we can do is be prepared!

There are plenty of home fire safety tips to be prepared before there is every any danger of a fire. Of course, it is important to have smoke detectors, throwing away frayed electrical cords, not smoking in bed, or leaving candles unattended, but there is also something else that is very important that people are forgetting to do daily and that is closing your bedroom doors while you sleep.

“According to global independent safety science company UL’s Firefighter Safety Research Institute (FSRI), closing your bedroom door every night before going to sleep could be life-saving. During a nighttime fire, a closed bedroom door can slow the fire’s spread, reduce smoke levels, and provide a barrier against deadly levels of carbon monoxide.”

After a fire has started and the smoke has filled the house having your bedroom door closed at night can give you more time to escape and keep you safe longer while you wait for the fire department. Families belongings, layouts of homes and the materials used in construction is more flammable now. In the 1980’s families had about 17 minutes to escape from their home before it was up in flames and today families only have about 3 minutes to get out the door. Every second counts, so closing bedroom doors will give that added time that may make the difference between life and death.

Fire & Smoke Damage Tips for your home in Summit County Ohio

8/17/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of West Akron was recently called out to a home in Tallmadge Ohio to clean up after a fire started in this home.

The one place you feel completely safe is your own home. This can change in a second when a fire starts and smoke fills your home. The residue that is left behind after the fire is out is SOOT. Soot is a black powdery or flaky substance consisting largely of amorphous carbon, produced by the incomplete burning of organic matter. Do not take cleaning soot into your own hands, its important to call the professionals of SERVPRO of West Akron to cleanup after a fire burns your home. Below are helpful tips:

What To Do After A Fire

  • Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat or water without consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat or water.

Fire Safety During this Holiday Season

12/15/2016 (Permalink)

Christmas Tree on Fire

This time of year we decorate our homes with trees, pretty lights, candles and decorations. These items bring smiles to our faces as we celebrate the holidays. Unfortunately, some of these items can cause a fire to your home or business.

The American Red Cross offers the following safety tips to reduce the fire risk:

1. Place Christmas trees, candles and other holiday decorations at least three feet away from the heat sources like fireplaces, portable heaters, radiators, heat vents and candles.

2. Make sue that light strings and other holiday decorations are in good condition. Do not use anything with frayed electrical cords and always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

3. Always unplug tree and holiday lights before leaving the property or going to bed.

4. Never use lit candles to decorate a tree. Always extinguish candles before leaving the room or going to bed.

5. Use only sturdy tree stands designed not to tip over. Keep curious pets and children away from Christmas trees.

6. Keep anything that can catch on fire - pot holders, oven mits, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels or curtains - away from your stove top.

SERVPRO of West Akron wishes you and your family a safe and happy holiday season.

SERVPRO of West Akron Smoke and Soot Clean up

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Summit County Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of West Akron will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
