water road If you experience flooding damage to your home or business, call SERVPRO of West Akron at 330-867-5723.

Floods rank as one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether you live near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is potential for suffering flood damage.

Just because you haven’t experienced a flood in the past, doesn’t mean you won’t in the future. In fact, 20% of all insurance claims paid by the national flood insurance program we’re for policies in low risk areas. On average claims cost 3 billion in annual losses in the United States. A commercial flood damage claim average more than $75,000.

According to the American Red Cross, floods cause more damage in the United States every year than any other weather-related disaster. The American Red Cross offers the following flood safety tips:

Staying Safe Indoors

  • Turn off the power and water mains if instructed to do so by local authorities.
  • Boil tap water until water sources have been declared safe.
  • Avoid contact with floodwater. It may be contaminated with sewage or contain dangerous insects or animals.
  • Continue listening to local area radio, NOAA radio or TV stations for the latest information and updates.
  • Don’t use gas or electrical appliances that have been flooded.
  • Dispose of any food that encounters flood water.

Staying Safe Outdoors

  • Don't walk, swim or drive through floodwater. Just six inches of fast-flowing water can knock you over and two feet will float a car.
  • If caught on a flooded road with rapidly rising waters, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground.
  • Don't walk on beaches or riverbanks.
  • Don’t allow children to play in or near flood water.
  • Avoid contact with floodwater. It may be contaminated with sewage or contain dangerous insects or animals.
  • Stay out of areas subject to flooding. Underpasses, dips, low spots, canyons, washes, etc. can become filled with water.

If flood does strike your home or business, contact SERVPRO of West Akron. Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure. Water Damage Restoration Protocol Steps

7/21/2020 (Permalink)

Air Movers Equipment Basement SERVPRO air mover equipment to dry-out a flooded basement in Tallmadge, Ohio.

Water and mold damage can be very destructive to your home or business. The most important thing to remember in case of a flood is to act quickly. First, call your insurance company to see if the damage is covered.  Most insurance agents or adjusters will recommend a reputable and approved restoration company to do the clean-up. Find out if you have a deductible and know what it is. If you do not have insurance the first thing you must do is dry out your basement.

If water is left longer than 48-hours, it can be considered hazardous and the cleanup process can turn into a much bigger expense.

The following clean up steps are the proper protocol:

  1. Extract the water and find the source of the problem.
  2. Remove any contaminated materials including carpet, drywall, boxes, and anything else that might’ve gotten wet. The level of saturation in the amount of time and materials were exposed to the water will determine if the items are salvageable.
  3. Place air-movers and dehumidification equipment throughout the flooded area. Keep them on until the basement and crawl space is thoroughly dry. This may take 3-5 days.
  4. Do not replace or remove any of the unsalvageable materials until your insurance adjuster has deemed them unsalvageable. Make sure all your items are free of mold before moving them to a dry area of the home.

If you find mold in your basement or crawlspace or there are signs in your house like a musty smell, you may need to have the air tested. This test should be conducted by a certified inspector and sent to an accredited lab for analysis. Mold in your home could be a major problem most importantly it can cause health problems such as allergies, and respiratory disorders. If after a water event you find elevated amounts of mold in your home, you must get rid of it properly do you ensure the regrowth will not happen.

If you have a water or flood damage to your home or business, SERVPRO of West Akron has emergency services 24 hours a day – 7 days a week! Our crews are highly trained to remove the damaged materials and begin the restoration process using specialized equipment to determine the wet areas, extracting any standing water and placing fans and dehumidifiers to remove all excess moisture to restore your home to “Like it never even happened."

Sump Pump Tips to Avoid a Flooded Basement

6/9/2020 (Permalink)

Sump pump A broken sump pump can cause flooding in your basement and can lead to severe water damage in Akron, Ohio.

What is a sump pump? It is a pump to remove any water that collects in your home’s sump basin. The sump basin is typically in your basement to collect any water that makes its way inside from heavy rains or extra ground water. If the pump fails for whatever reason, any water that collects in the sump basin can eventually overflow into the basement and cause water damage.

Six tips that every sump pump owner should know to avoid water damage to your basement.

  1. Confirm pump is working before a rainstorm. Pour a bucket of water into your sump pump to activate pump.
  2. Clean the interior of your sump out. Some pumps that are not used regularly are more prone to developing sediment. If the lid of your sump pump does not cover the basin some objects may end up in some pump and cause a clog.
  3. Install a battery backup system. Install a secondary pump that is battery operated. This is important in the instance of a power outage. The battery backup pump is going to runoff the battery when the primary pump does not have electricity also in the situation where your primary pump is not keeping up with the extra inflow of water.
  4. Knowing the type of sump pump equipment. If your sump pump breaks or malfunction you know your model and serial number to quickly purchase any parts to fix your pump.
  5. How your sump pump operates. Knowing the workings of the system and how it operates will help you troubleshoot and determine any malfunctions allowing you to save money. Also, knowing how it operates will prevent you from being taken advantage of by professionals.
  6. Alarm system – Installing an alarm will let you know when your sump pump has stopped working.

It is important to either install a battery back-up or an alarm to your sump pump to prevent basement flooding. It will save you money in the long run.
If you experience a basement flooding from your sump pump, call the professional team at SERVPRO of West Akron 330-867-5723.

5/25/2020 (Permalink)

Street Water Spring storms in Stow, Ohio can cause flooding and water damage to your home.

Strong Spring storms in Summit county, Ohio can produce 60-70 mph winds and torrential rain that can produce flooding. It is important to be prepared before these storms can cause water damage to your home.

Spring Flooding Prevention Guide

Fix Leaks Immediately: If you have cracks in your foundation or roof, it will make it easy for rain to get in and caused water damage.

Purchase Extra Protection: Spend money on your roof and purchase a waterproof barrier so that water does not seep into your home through the cracks.

Close Foundation Cracks: Seal any cracks in your foundation with caulk or masonry, which will fill the gaps for a cheap price.

Battery Powered Sump Pump: If the power goes out then your sump pump will stop as well. Having a battery powered pump will ensure that you are protected.

Move Important Items: Move your valuables to a higher level of your home if you can, it will protect them during a severe flooding event.

Catalog Your Possessions: Taking a home inventory can help you with an insurance claim if your home does end up flooding in the future.

Anchor Fuel Tanks: Unanchored tanks can float and release fuel in the event of a flood, so you should anchor them and wrap them in a waterproof insulation.

Prevent Sewer Back-ups: Install a sewer line check valve, which will ensure that the water only flows one-way which will prevent a flood.

Clear Drains and Gutters: Keep your gutters free of debris so that water is being carried away from your home, not towards it.

Install French Drains: French drains carry water away from your home, and are a good investment for homeowners whose properties are prone to flooding.

Electrical Fires Can Cause Major Damage to Homes in Akron, Ohio

2/3/2020 (Permalink)

Light Bulb Electricity can cause fires to homes and business in Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, Tallmadge, Stow and surrounding communities.

Each year, there are 40,000 residential fires due to electrical wiring, claiming more than 350 lives, causing thousands of injuries from shocks and burns, creating 2 million and personal property damage. Electrical receptacles are responsible for 40 deaths and 5,300 fires.

Electricity is our most mysterious form of energy. You can’t see it, hear it or smell it, but you sure can feel it!

Electricity seeks the easiest path to the ground, trying to find a conductor, such as metal, wet wood, or water. Humans are conductors, since 70% of the body is water. So, if a person touches an energized bare wire or faulty equipment while grounded, electricity will instantly pass through the body to the ground, causing a harmful, potentially fatal shock.

Don’t Be Shocked:

  • It is estimated that 70% electrocutions could be prevented.
  • 32% of all deaths caused by residential electrical systems are as a result of faulty cords and plugs.
  • Electrical burns to the mouth accounted for half of the injuries to young to your children.
  • Electricity can kill in one second.

Treat electricity with the respect it deserves. Never assume anything! If you experience an electrical fire, please call the professionals at SERVPRO of West Akron. Water Underneath a Dishwasher Can Cause Major Damage in Akron, Ohio

9/23/2019 (Permalink)

Dehumidifier in kitchen SERVPRO Dehumidifier in a kitchen that had water damage from a dishwasher supply line.

Water from a dishwasher can cause major water damage

A dishwasher is a staple appliance in most homes in Akron, Ohio. It saves us time from not having to wash dishes, glasses and cooking items by hand. Sometimes, you may even start the dishwasher before leaving your house to run errands. You may then come home to find that your kitchen is full of water.

Dishwashers have a seal that keeps the water inside the tub, but you can have a slow leak in the joints of the supply water line that runs the dishwasher or in the drain line beneath and after time the leak has caused mold to grow.  Since, the dishwasher is under the counter-tops and between cabinets overtime the water can do severe damage to the sub-floor, walls and cabinets. If water is still present, then the water needs to be cleaned up and dried out. If mold is seen that mold remediation may need to be done.

Your dishwasher leak can cause water damage and the following may need to be repaired or even replaced:

  • Tile
  • Wood
  • Laminate
  • Electrical wiring
  • Drywall
  • Wallpaper
  • Paint

The moment you notice your dishwasher is or has leaked, make sure to first turn off the dishwasher. If you find water on the floor use a towel or mop to clean it up, you might need to pull out your dishwasher to get any water that has pooled beneath the dishwasher itself. Calling a local water restoration company like SERVPRO of West Akron is recommended to make sure the water you don’t see is also dried up to ensure that you don’t have any moisture in your floorboards, which can quickly develop mold.

Water Damage After A Storm

9/4/2019 (Permalink)

A tree has fallen on a roof after a storm in Akron, Ohio. Our crews had to tarp a roof from a fallen tree after a severe storm hit Akron, Ohio.

A severe storm can produce large hail, severe wind and heavy rainfall and leave your home with water and structural damage. A tree branch that has fallen during a storm onto your roof can cause major damage. Not only to your roof, but rain can cause water damage to the inside. When the sun pops back out and the walls are drying nicely, or so you think, the moisture within is causing damage and overtime this can create a mold problem. When rain gets into your attic it can make its way into the walls or ceilings of your home. It doesn’t take long for mold to grow in dark and hidden areas. Moisture in the right environment can cause mold spores to start rapidly spreading within 48 hours, affecting air quality. To make sure that the water that has entered your home is completely gone it is relative to call a professional water restoration company to assess the damage.  Even if you believe you have soaked up the water, the area might still be wet underneath. Moisture detection equipment is imperative for hidden water in structural materials. Our SERVPRO of West Akron crews are equipped with moisture meters to detect where there is still moisture. We can identify all affected areas to prevent future damage. We will then place drying equipment to completely dry out your structure.

Two males and two females sitting on a desk in a SERVPRO office. Owner, Laurie Kolenz, and her SERVPRO of West Akron crew chiefs want you to be prepared for when water or fire strikes your home or business.

No matter where you live or work, emergencies caused by weather, fire, wind, water, and other natural or manmade disasters can strike at any time and are largely unpredictable. SERVPRO of West Akron reminds Akron area home and business owners that preparing in advance is the best thing you can do to help minimize a disaster’s impact on your loved ones and your property. Each year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designates September as National Preparedness Month – a time to create, or update, your plan for when disaster strikes.

“In the same way that people make ‘resolutions’ at the New Year, National Preparedness Month is a great time to resolve to create a plan, or review your existing plan, each and every year,” said Laurie Kolenz of SERVPRO® of West Akron. “Everyone needs a comprehensive emergency plan. Business owners also need to plan for business interruption and continuation. But equally importantly, families and businesses alike need immediate access to data like emergency and insurance contacts, shut-off valves, electrical panel locations, and the line of command to authorize work so emergency responders can react quickly and appropriately during the emergency. This month’s focus on preparedness is a great incentive for both families and businesses to put a plan in place and review it regularly.”

Creating an emergency plan is straightforward, according to Kolenz. No matter what type of threats exist where you live or work – wildfires, flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, or other natural or manmade disasters – tools are available from FEMA (https://www.ready.gov) with guidelines for preparing emergency food, water, and medical supplies; planning for special needs; and creating communication and evacuation plans. These tools and others, like the SERVPRO READY app, also help you store essential contact and property information electronically where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds if disaster strikes. Both home and business owners can download the free app at https://ready.SERVPRO.com/home/mobileapp.

Local business owners can take an additional preparedness step by designating SERVPRO of West Akron as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider. SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of the facility and assist the owner in completing a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) to be stored in the READY app. The key to getting your life or business back on track is timely response after a disaster strikes. SERVPRO of West Akron specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup, and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers. Scoping the area of the water damage involves locating all the areas of the structure into which water has intruded. They will also determine how much moisture has been absorbed into the structure and the contents in the home. The crews use detection devices such as:

Moisture Sensors are used to detect moistures in carpets and carpet padding.

Moisture Meters are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. SERVPRO crews use this meter to test the moisture in daily until there is no moisture detected and the area has been dried completely.

Thermo-hygrometers measure both temperature and relative humidity. Capturing these two readings and using a psychrometric chart it will calculate specific humidity, dew point and vapor moisture.

Infrared Cameras can identify the location and extent of moisture in walls very effectively.

Manometers are used to measure the difference in air pressure when creating a negative air pressure environment.

After the crews have determined the areas that have been affected by water using the different detection equipment the clean up process begins.

Water Damage Restoration Costs to Cleanup in Stow, Ohio

7/23/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage to a basement in Stow, Ohio.

You go down to your basement and find that you have two inches of standing water. You start to panic wondering how much will this cost? Unfortunately, water damage is an expensive expense. It is important to have insurance to cover these expenses, but if your water damage isn’t covered below are the factors that will determine the cost. An article in the home.costhelper.com/water-damage gives a detailed description on how much it might cost:

  • The cost of water damage restoration is based on several factors. These include the size of the affected area, the extent of the damage, the materials and water type. There are three categories -- the least expensive to clean up is category 1, which is clean water from a faucet or supply pipe. Category 2 is gray wastewater with minor contaminants, such as overflow from a dishwasher or washing machine. Category 3 is black water, containing sewage or other toxic debris.
  • Fixing a small area of water damage in a ceiling due to a leaky roof can be $100-$300 to patch the sheet rock, or $30-$50 for do-it-yourself materials -- not including the cost of fixing the roof and repainting the ceiling.
  • Drying a flooded basement can cost $500-$10,000 or more, depending on the size of the basement, the depth of the flooding and the water type (clean, gray wastewater or black/toxic). See How Much Does a Flooded Basement Cost. Depending on where the appliance is located in the house, cleaning up after a faulty water heater, washing machine, dishwasher or air conditioner averages about $5,000, according to HomeOwnerNet.com.
  • Damage from a burst water pipe can cost $5,000-$70,000 or more with an average insurance claim costing $15,000.
  • If an entire house is flooded with storm water, the National Flood Insurance Program provides a flood damage simulator[2] to predict the total cost based on the height of the water. For 1-4 inches of water, the estimated cost is $7,800. For 9-12 inches, the estimate is $18,930. At 18 inches, the estimated cost is $26,285.

Water damage might be covered by insurance. Flood insurance typically covers damage from a natural disaster, when outside water or mud overflows an otherwise dry house. Homeowners insurance does not cover floods but may cover water damage caused by minor individualized disasters, such as a hailstorm smashing a window or a broken water pipe spewing water, these items are usually covered as long as the problem wasn't caused by a lack of standard maintenance. As always, coverage for a loss under an insurance claim would be determined by your insurance adjuster.

Our team of professionals at SERVPRO of West Akron will be able to assist in your restoration of any water damage – 24 hours a day! Give us a call today with any questions you might have at 330-867-5723 or visit our website at www.SERVPROwestakron.com.

Water Damage Caused by Clogged Gutters in Akron, Ohio

6/11/2019 (Permalink)

Water Damage to a ceiling from a roof leak caused by clogged gutters in Akron, Ohio.

The importance of cleaning your gutters when it comes to water damage to your home in Akron, Ohio.

The reason we have gutters on our home is to collect the rainwater from the roof and divert it away from our house saving us from possible water or mold damage to the exterior or interior of homes. It is important to check your gutters during the Spring and Fall months to see if the seasonal elements have destroyed or clogged your gutters. Below are tips to help make sure you avoid the possibilities of future water or mold disasters.

  • Replacing gutters on older homes: If you live in an historic home with older style gutters than replacing them maybe needed. Older style gutters are made up of segments that are joined together at seams and attached to the fascia with screws. These seams and openings collect water that can’t easily escape, encouraging the growth of mold that can spread to the fascia and roof.
  • Steeped pitched roof – If you live in a home that has a steeply pitched roof during very heavy rainfall the gutters on the home can’t handle the volume of the water flow. The excessive water flow can damage your outside deck, patio or even foundation. It is important to inspect these gutters regularly to make sure they aren’t clogged or replacing them with larger higher-capacity gutters.
  • Clogged gutters – If you have mature trees of any kind then most likely your gutters will become clogged with leaves, sticks, pine needles and…..Cleaning these gutters out with a leaf blower, wet vacuum, gutter scoop, power washer or even by hand will help prevent the flow of water down the spout and flowing over the gutter onto the fascia and causing possible water damage to the foundation.
  • Seasonal Storms – Heavy Spring storms bring rain, hail, or windstorms that can crack gutters or send leaves, twigs, or longer branches from nearby trees into gutters. This debris can then decompose in the gutter and slow or completely block the normal flow of water away from your home causing water damage. For these reasons, it is prudent to inspect your gutter after every heavy storm, clearing out debris and sealing any holes with gutter caulk. During the winter months ice and snow can take a toll on gutters. The heavy amount of snow and ice rooftops can cause nearby gutters to crack or detach from the house, while ice dams can lead to leaks in your attic or ceiling as well as damage to the roof, gutters, or foundation.

Pet Fire Safety

6/6/2019 (Permalink)

A smoke detector that was in a fire in Akron, Ohio.

Did you know that house fires affect approximately 500,000 pets each year?

This statistic and tips are according to the American Fire Administration. A pet can easily start a house fire by accidentally knocking over a candle when left attended. They can also knock over halogen lamps and space heaters by a wagging tail or a curious cat. Puppies and kittens can chew and fry electrical cords that be a fire hazard. Here are a few ways to be prepared to keep your pets safe from fire dangers.

  • Install plenty of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.
  • Check your smoke and carbon dioxide detectors regularly and change their batteries at least twice a year.
  • Invest in monitored smoke detectors. A monitoring smoke detector will notify a fire department if a fire develops while you are away from your home.
  • Post stickers on your door and windows to alert fire fighters that there are pets in the household. Put information on these notes that describe how many and what kind of pets are living in the home.
  • Make sure your pets wear a collar with identification tags and have a microchip implanted. Taking these precautions can avoid the heartache of a lost pet during these times of chaos.
  • Create an evacuation plan for your family and pets. Make sure everyone in your family knows the escape routes.
  • Keep leashes, pet carriers and treats by an exit. You will need these to help evacuate your pets during a fire.

Unfortunately, we can never prevent or predict when and if a fire will happen, the most important thing we can do is be prepared!

SERVPRO of West Akron the Water Restoration Company To Call

3/28/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO equipment used to dry-out a structure.

Has your home or business been damaged by water? Who do you call? What do they do?

SERVPRO of West Akron is a preferred restoration vendor in Ohio that has the credentials, knowledge, and team to help restore your home after a flood, pipe-break, sump pump or sewage back up, appliance malfunction and more. A quick response is key to preventing further secondary damage.

Our crews inspect the areas where the water has intruded to identify the extent to which water has traveled throughout the structure. We will walk the property with the homeowner and discuss the process that we will use to dry out the structure. The information gathered in this initial inspection will also be documented and then used to plan the needed emergency procedures.

The crews will begin the mitigation process, the first step is to fix the problem of the water loss before drying out the structure. A plumber may need to be called to fix the sump pump or pipe-break. After the problem has been fixed and water is still standing the crews will extract any remaining water. This is important to control the moisture and contamination.

The next step is to quickly return to a dry condition, the less damage. We believe the importance of restoring a structure and its belongings than replacing them. This saves money for the homeowner and insurance company. Placing dehumidifiers and air-mover equipment will remove the moisture through evaporation and dehumidification.

After the crews have tested the structure with moisture meters to confirm that the structure and its contents are now dry than the drying services are done. The repairs of any drywall, flooring, cabinets, etc. will be completed and final cleaning will be done. The property will be back to its preloss condition.

SERVPRO of West Akron is available 24 hours a day at 330-867-5723.

Three Categories of Water Damage

We follow the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) of the three different levels and classes of water damage:

Each category has a classification that determines the level of risk and differential of cleaning.

Category 1 The water comes from a sanitary source such as water lines, faucets, toilet tanks, drinking fountains, etc. Although the water is clean and has no substantial risk from dermal, ingestion, or inhalation exposure. It may not always remain clean after it comes into contact with other surfaces or materials. Also, if it isn’t cleaned up quickly, it can degrade into a category 2 leading to health issues and increasing loss to the structure.

Category 2 This water contains significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed. This water is from dishwashers, washing machines, toilet overflow with urine, but not feces, and other sources where the water has been “used”. It may contain potentially unsafe levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms, as well as other organic or inorganic matter (chemical or biological).

Category 3 The water contains dangerously unsanitary containments. It could cause serious illness or even death if ingested. It is usually from a sewer backup, flooding from rivers or streams. Toilet overflow with feces and stagnant water that has become a habitat for bacterial growth.

It is always important to call water damage professionals to help clean up and restore your home. Call the SERVPRO of West Akron crews at 330-867-5723. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, even on holidays!

Keeping Your Bedroom Doors Can Save You From a Fire in Akron, Ohio

2/15/2019 (Permalink)

Fire damage to a home in Akron, Ohio. The family got out safe.

There are plenty of home fire safety tips to be prepared before there is every any danger of a fire. Of course, it is important to have smoke detectors, throwing away frayed electrical cords, not smoking in bed, or leaving candles unattended, but there is also something else that is very important that people are forgetting to do daily and that is closing your bedroom doors while you sleep.

“According to global independent safety science company UL’s Firefighter Safety Research Institute (FSRI), closing your bedroom door every night before going to sleep could be life-saving. During a nighttime fire, a closed bedroom door can slow the fire’s spread, reduce smoke levels, and provide a barrier against deadly levels of carbon monoxide.”

After a fire has started and the smoke has filled the house having your bedroom door closed at night can give you more time to escape and keep you safe longer while you wait for the fire department. Families belongings, layouts of homes and the materials used in construction is more flammable now. In the 1980’s families had about 17 minutes to escape from their home before it was up in flames and today families only have about 3 minutes to get out the door. Every second counts, so closing bedroom doors will give that added time that may make the difference between life and death.

If you have any fire damage to your home, call the professionals at SERVPRO of West Akron at 330-867-5723 to restore your home.

Burst Pipes in Akron, Ohio

2/6/2019 (Permalink)

Pipe Break in Akron, Ohio

Pipes are breaking in Northeast, Ohio after the Polar Vortex has come and gone.  The warm weather is now thawing out the frozen pipes.  Homeowners are waking up to find water spraying all over because their plumbing fittings have popped and pipes have burst.

Homeowners in the Akron, Ohio count on running water in their home for eating, drinking, cleaning, washing dishes and clothes, but when those pipes freeze all of that is in danger and the cost of repairs and mitigation will be very expensive.

Steps you can take to try to avoid frozen pipes:

  • Make sure your furnace has been inspected before the winter season. If your furnace breaks down and your home isn’t heated your pipes could freeze and possibly burst. Insurance companies may not cover your water loss claim if your heat isn’t on.
  • When we have extreme cold in the area it is important to have a light steady stream of water flow from your faucets than just a trickle.
  • Open up cabinet doors that have pipes located next to exterior walls.
  • Get heat into drafty crawl spaces if you have pipes located in or near them.
  • Keep thermostat above 62 degrees.

If your pipes do freeze, shut off your main water supply valve, that way, if a pipe burst you won’t have major flooding. Call a plumber to thaw out any frozen pipes. If your water line does freeze, it could expand and split the pipe and water damage will occur. Call SERVPRO of West Akron to help mitigate and clean up your water damage at 330-867-5723.

Our crews are extracting water from a pipe break in a home in Akron, Ohio.

How to avoid burst pipes and water damage in Akron, Ohio

When the temperature begins to drop it becomes more common for homeowners to find themselves at the hands of a burst pipe. A burst pipe occurs when the water temperature drops and freezes over. The ice leads to a build up of pressure which causes the pipe to burst. When a pipe bursts the water can flood your home while causing damage to your walls and flooring. Fortunately, there are many ways for homeowners and maintenance professions to prevent pipe bursts.

When preventing pipe bursts it is important to take care of both the inside and outside of your house. In regards to inside it is key to remember to have sufficient insulation in order to protect pipes in unheated areas: attics, garages, and crawl spaces. Once the temperature drops open cabinets throughout your house such as in the kitchen or bathrooms to allow more heat circulation in areas pipes are likely to burst. The outside of your house can be taken care of by caulking to seal pipes to ensure no leaks. Insulate and cover all exterior water accesses that can not be turned off such as faucets and hoses.

If you travel in the winter or leave your home for a long period of time it is dire to take extra steps to prevent burst pipes. Before you leave lower the thermostat, do not turn it off. A safe temperature can be set at 55 degrees or higher. Letting your faucets drip at a slow rate can keep water running which lowers the chance of your pipes freezing.

If your pipes unfortunately burst call SERVPRO of West Akron and we will restore and clean your water damaged property in Akron, Ohio. We will make it will be “Like it never even happened.” Call us today at  330-867-5723 or visit our website at www.SERVPROwestakron.com

Mold Growth in a basement bedroom due to a water damage in Akron, Ohio.

The fall weather is here in North East Ohio and that means it is time to clean your gutters! Did you know that SERVPRO of West Akron is called out to do water cleanup and/or mold mitigation in basements because of clogged gutters?  The reason we have gutters on your home is to guide the heavy rain to the downspouts and away from your home. The importance of cleaning the gutters is to protect your roofs, siding and foundations to your home. If your gutters are clogged the water still needs to go somewhere, so it finds its way down the back of your siding causing the wood to rot and form mold. It can also flow over the sides of the gutter and pool around the foundation. Over time the water can crack the foundation and potentially resulting in water to your basement. Most foundation issues are not covered by insurance. Please be safe when cleaning out your gutters. If you do end up with water damage or mold to your home, please contact SERVPRO of West Akron at 330-867-5723.

Storm Watch vs Warning Forecast in Akron, Ohio

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

A severe storm in Akron Ohio damaged this home.

Storm Watch versus Storm Warning

In our daily routine we check the weather forecast. Sometimes, that forecast will prepare us for storms that maybe developing and we continue to watch the news in case something severe develops. We hear the terms Storm Watch and Strom Warning on TV, but what really is the difference between a storm watch vs a storm warning?

Knowing what weather terms mean can help you prepare your home and family for any type of weather event.  The best time to learn them is before any emergency happens.

A WATCH means that the potential exists for the development of severe thunderstorms or tornadoes, depending upon the specific type of watch issued. In the case of a tornado watch, this DOES NOT mean that a tornado has been seen or even indicated on radar...it just means that conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes in thunderstorms. Similarly, a severe thunderstorm watch means that conditions are just conducive for the development of severe weather and DOES NOT indicate that severe weather has been reported. While no immediate action on the part of the general public is required for the issuance of a watch, citizens should keep up to date on the current weather situation and be prepared to seek shelter if necessary.

This is a great time to prepare your house if forecasts are calling for a strong storm.

  • Tie down or bring in outdoor items that can go airborne.
  • Clean out your gutters to prevent water from pooling on your roof.
  • For serious storms, consider boarding up your windows.
  • If a possible tornado is on its way, make sure your safe room is ready.

A WARNING, on the other hand, requires more immediate action and should be taken seriously. A severe thunderstorm warning indicates that severe weather is imminent in your area or is already occurring (based on either human observation or doppler radar). The term severe refers to hail greater than or equal to 1.00" in diameter and/or wind gusts that meet or exceed 58 mph. Although these storms can also be associated with dangerous cloud to ground lightning or heavy rainfall that is capable of causing flash flooding, neither of these two items serve as criteria for a severe thunderstorm warning being issued.

What do I do if severe weather is coming?

  • Have a plan for immediate shelter in your home for your family and pets.
  • It is possible to loose electricity during severe storms. Be prepared by charging your cell phone and have a battery operated weather radio.
  • Be prepared by having all emergency documents in a water/fire proof safe, first aid kit, bottle water and food,
  • Prepare your home by tying down any outside furniture, trampolines, grills, flower pots, etc.
  • If a possible tornado, consider boarding up your windows.

If you need storm damage cleanup and restoration, please call SERVPRO of West Akron 24/7/365 at 330-867-5723!

September is National Preparedness Month: “Disasters happen, prepare now, learn how”

Local SERVPRO disaster recovery specialist offers Akron property owners tips for preparing for, surviving, and recovering from the unexpected

Akron, OH (Grassroots Newswire) August 28, 2018 - Local disaster restoration specialist Laurel Kolenz & Maureen Gentile, owners of SERVPRO® of West Akron, reminds Akron property owners that September is National Preparedness Month. This annual event, sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), provides families and businesses with the information and resources they need to plan for, react to, survive, and recover from an emergency, before the emergency happens. (https://www.ready.gov/september)

For National Preparedness Month 2018, themed “Disasters happen, prepare now, learn how,” FEMA has prepared a week-by-week calendar of recommended actions property owners can take to be ready if disaster does strike:

Week 1. Create an emergency plan that includes signing up for emergency alerts and making contingency plans for shelter, evacuation, and family communication.

Week 2. Learn life-saving skills. CPR is a good place to start, but also be certain you know how to turn off the utilities in your home and ensure your smoke and CO detectors are properly installed and working.

Week 3. Check your insurance coverage. Once the emergency is over, appropriate and sufficient insurance will be key to getting your life back to normal, or at least on track.

Week 4. Plan financially for the possibility of a disaster. This goes beyond having a “rainy day fund” for immediate needs. Gather and organize important home, business, insurance, financial, and personal documents and keep them up-to-date and stored in a secure, water-and-fire proof location.

“There’s a difference between surviving a disaster and recovering from a disaster,” says Kolenz. “Families and businesses who take the time to create both a short- and long-term plan to deal with the unexpected are better able to respond quickly if the unexpected happens, which can improve their chances of survival. Having key information at their fingertips in the aftermath of the emergency can set them on the path to recovery more quickly and with less stress.”

Because SERVPRO recognizes a fast response is critical in any emergency, Kolenz reminds Akron-area commercial and residential property owners they can download the SERVPRO READY app for free at https://ready.SERVPRO.com/home/mobileapp. The app allows users to store essential contact and property information electronically, where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds, right from the scene, if disaster strikes. For local business owners who designate SERVPRO of West Akron as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider, SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of their facility, help the owner complete a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP), and store that profile in the READY app.

“SERVPRO disaster cleanup and restoration specialists are ready to respond to emergencies big and small,” said Kolenz. “From SERVPRO’s Disaster Recovery Team, a group of elite large-loss specialists, prequalified and strategically positioned throughout the United States to handle any size disaster, to local SERVPRO professionals like SERVPRO of West Akron, we specialize in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping make it ‘Like it never even happened’ for both commercial and residential customers.”

Fire Safety Tips for homeowners in Akron, Ohio

9/4/2018 (Permalink)

Home Fire in Akron, Ohio

It is very important to educate your family of fire safety and to have a plan of action. Home fires can start and spread quickly. Just a little bit of planning can make a big difference for your family. Here are a few tips:

  • Check Your Smoke Alarms regularly to make sure they are still working properly. Change the batteries every year.  Replace all smoke detectors after 10 years.
  • Create and Practice a Fire Escape Plan. It is important to have two different escape plans out of every room. Teach your children to stay low and go because smoke is very toxic.  Also, Practice feeling the door, doorknob and cracks around the door with the back of your hand to see if they are too hot and finally have a designated meeting place outside and away from the home.
  • In an Emergency, Leave Home Immediately. If you are inside during a fire, leave immediately and then when you are safe outside call 911.
  • If You’re Stuck Inside, Cover the Areas Where Smoke Might Come In. If you are unable to safely leave your home during a fire, cover your vents, doors and cracks around your door with blankets or towels to keep smoke out of your room then call 911.
  • To prevent fires: Keep space heaters away from flammable materials, store gasoline in locked areas away from children, turn off any devices when you leave home, avoid over plugging several appliance cords into the same electrical socket, blow out candles, secure fireplaces with screens. When cooking make sure you don’t have anything flammable near cooking surfaces and have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.

Mold Growth and Deodorization in Akron, Ohio

8/23/2018 (Permalink)

Mold found in a damp basement in Akron, Ohio.

Mold can be found in many areas of your home or business other than walls and ceilings. Your floors, appliances, carpet, or furniture can provide the food mold needs to grow. The thing all molds need to grow is moisture, so you're most likely to see mold in damp places such as bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, basements, and crawl spaces.

Dry rot is another sign of potential mold damage. Dry rot occurs when something in the structure becomes wet and stays wet. Since mold grows with moisture and humidity, dry rot could indicate that’s a problem in your building. Seeing dry rot might not mean mold is present, but a SERVPRO of West Akron can come out and figure out the issue.

A smelly odor is a good sign that mold may be present.  Deodorization is perfectly safe for use if anyone notices a smelly odor, but it’s only a temporary fix for comfort. Deodorization techniques do not kill mold, but they can mask a smelly odor. The reason a smelly odor might be such a problem isn’t the lack of help deodorization provides, but the indication there could be mold growth behind walls. Mold growth behind walls is not noticeable right away.

When anyone sees even the smallest amount mold in their home, it’s time to call SERVPRO of West Akron to handle mold removal, mitigation, and remediation. Call us at 330-867-5723.

Mold Growth due to Water Damage

5/23/2018 (Permalink)

Mold found under a kitchen sink from water leak.

Mold Growth in homes in Akron, Ohio from water damage.

The most common causes of mold growing on walls are due to high humidity, condensation and water leaks from pipe breaks inside the walls.

Condensation forms when water vapor in the air meets cold surfaces and cools to become liquid. Condensation forms on the perimeter of walls on a house because the outside walls are often colder from the outside air on the other side of the house.

If you have high humidity in your home from drying wet clothes inside or steam from hot water might start mold growth on your walls and ceilings in your home. The best way to decrease humidity is to ventilate your home by opening windows and doors. Also, running a dehumidifier or air conditioning will help remove the humidity in your home.

Leaking pipes near or inside of walls or ceilings are a common cause of mold. If there is a leaking pipe inside a wall cavity then mold will start to grow and unfortunately won’t be discovered until mold has already started.

If you have a mold problem in your home or business, your primary focus should be safety:

  • Significant mold growth can occur in 48-72 hours.
  • Mold may present a greater risk to children, the elderly, and anyone with respiratory problems.
  • A strong, musty odor may indicate hidden mold behind drywall or under carpeting.

SERVPRO of West Akron recommends that you DO:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact a SERVPRO of West Akron and a mold remediation specialist will help you.

SERVPRO of West Akron recommends that you DO NOT:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

Winter Storm Damage Tips

11/30/2017 (Permalink)

Pipe Break in a garage from a winter storm.

As the weather outside gets frightful and your home becomes cozy and delightful the holiday season's aglow the snow begins to blow. It is very important to be prepared for when winter weather strikes at your home, business or even traveling. Here are some great tips:

7 Tips to Get Your Home Ready for Cold Weather

  1. Protect Your Pipes:
  • Drain water from outdoor faucets and sprinkler systems to keep those pipes from freezing.
  • Disconnect and store outdoor hoses; cover outdoor faucets with foam insulators.
  • Protect water pipes that run through unheated areas of your home with insulation, such as the attic, basement, or garage.
  1. Check the Heat:
  • Change your furnace filter at the start of the season and then every two to four months. Filters get dirty much more quickly if your home is dusty or if you have furry or feathery pets. Clogged or dirty filters are less efficient, which means your home might not warm up properly.
  • Consider installing a programmable thermostat if you don't have one. Programming it to be cooler at night and when you're not at home will save you money, and you can program it to be warmer for when you return or get up on cold winter mornings.
  1. Prevent Ice Dams
  • Clogged gutters and downspouts are the No. 1 cause of ice dams. Clean them out to keep water flowing during the winter.
  • Seal places that may allow warm air to leak from your home to your attic, such as around vent pipes, exhaust fans, chimneys, attic hatches and light fixtures.
  • Clean off soffit vents which are along the eaves of the house that allow air to flow into the attic.
  1. Clean and Store Lawn Equipment:
  • Clean the machine of oil and yard debris and sharpen the blades.
  • Store them for winter in a basement, garage, or covered storage shed where they're safe from the weather.
  1. Inspect the Fireplace and Chimney
  • Make sure fireplace and chimney are clean and animal free.
  • Close flue when you are not using your fireplace to prevent cold air coming into home from chimney.
  • Install glass glass fireplace doors or a chimney inflatable that blocks cold air from coming down the chimney and keeps in warm air.
  1. Seal Windows and Doors:
  • Caulk around windows and install weather stripping around doors where there are gaps.
  • Upgrading to double-pane windows and insulated doors to boost the energy efficiency of your home.
  1. Stock Up on Cold-weather Essentials:
  • Make an emergency kit for when a severe storm hits.
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Alternative heat source
  • Shovel or icemelt, salt or sand
  • Family plan of action in case you aren’t together when a winter storm hits.

Stay warm, save money and prevent damage to your home from cold and snow with these simple steps.

Prepare Your Home for Traveling

Pipe Break in a home that was vacant with no heat.

When you plan on taking a trip to visit family during the holidays its important to prepare your home for when you leave it. You never want to come home to find water in your house due to a pipe break. Below are several tips to insure coming home the same way you left it!

  1. Turn off the main water supply line: The main water supply controls all of the water in the house and is one of the best protections against needing to repair water damage and prevent flooding. Turning off the water supply can help prevent pipes from bursting while you’re away!

  2. Test your Sump Pump: In case there is an emergency, make sure the sump pump is working before leaving town.

  3. Leave the thermostat tuned on: Make sure your thermostat is set no lower than 60 degrees F to prevent pipes from freezing.

  4. Winterize your drainage system: Drain the water out of the toilet and add nontoxic antifreeze. Also, pour one-half cup of anti-freeze down the bathroom sinks, as well as down the bath tub.

  5. Unplug your electronics: Unplug all electronics before leaving your home to save money as well as to prevent any damage from a power surge.

Call SERVPRO of West Akron at 330-867-5723 if you need help with a fire or water damage to your home. We are here to help, "Like it never even happened."

She was kind, considerate, knowlegeable and went right to work, crawling around in my attic to find the source of the water. She was very thorough and explained the process clearly. She lugged a giant humidifier up 2.5 flights of stairs to the bedroom and began the drying process. She was in contact with me every day and when the rood leak was found and repaired the SERVPRO equipment was removed in a very timely manner. Understand Mold in Summit County Ohio

9/11/2017 (Permalink)

What Is Black Mold?

Stachybotrys chartarum is the type of mold often called “black mold” or “toxic mold”. Sensational news reports warn about the dangers of black mold and these stories can be alarming and confusing. Any mold in your home should be treated with caution – stay out of affected areas and don’t touch or disturb the mold.

How Do I Tell If It’s Black Mold?

Since many types of mold can produce allergens and irritants, you should contact a qualified mold remediation company regardless of the color or type of mold. In many instances, multiple types of mold can exist in the same house or structure. If you suspect that you have a mold problem, contact a SERVPRO of West Akron immediately at 330-867-5723.

Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  •  Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  •  Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  •  Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce toxins harmful to humans and pets.
  •  Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  •  Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.

Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent

SERVPRO of West Akron was recently called to help a homeowner in Stow, Ohio for a water loss. As our crews proceeded to get the trucks full of our fans and humidifiers we gave the homeowner several suggestions to help minimize damage or prevent further damage while they waited for our team to arrive.

  1. Shut off the water source, if possible.
  2. Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas. DO NOT enter enter rooms with standing water, as electrical shock hazards may exist.
  3. Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping especially on wood furniture.
  4. Remove or prop up wet upholstery cushions to allow more drying time.
  5. Move any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and any other valuable items.
  6. Remove books, newspapers or other colored items on wet carpet as they may bleed and cause staining.
  7. DO NOT use household vacuum cleaner to remove water because there is potential for electrical shock or cause damage to vacuum cleaner.
  8. If water damage is caused by black water do not come in contact with it, so you don’t spread it to other areas of the home. Do not turn on HVAC system or ceiling fans to spread contaminate air.

It is always important to call the professionals to classify and clean up all water damage. Your local team in Summit County, Ohio, SERVPRO of West Akron can be reached at 330-867-5723 and is available 24/7 hours a day for emergency clean up and restoration.

Fire Safety During this Holiday Season

12/15/2016 (Permalink)

Christmas Tree on Fire

This time of year we decorate our homes with trees, pretty lights, candles and decorations. These items bring smiles to our faces as we celebrate the holidays. Unfortunately, some of these items can cause a fire to your home or business.

The American Red Cross offers the following safety tips to reduce the fire risk:

1. Place Christmas trees, candles and other holiday decorations at least three feet away from the heat sources like fireplaces, portable heaters, radiators, heat vents and candles.

2. Make sue that light strings and other holiday decorations are in good condition. Do not use anything with frayed electrical cords and always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

3. Always unplug tree and holiday lights before leaving the property or going to bed.

4. Never use lit candles to decorate a tree. Always extinguish candles before leaving the room or going to bed.

5. Use only sturdy tree stands designed not to tip over. Keep curious pets and children away from Christmas trees.

6. Keep anything that can catch on fire - pot holders, oven mits, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels or curtains - away from your stove top.

SERVPRO of West Akron wishes you and your family a safe and happy holiday season.

September is National Preparedness Month

SERVPRO National Preparedness Flyer

Don’t forget that September is National Preparedness Month!

Each September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sponsors National Preparedness Month  (http://www.ready.gov) to highlight the importance of being prepared for the unexpected. This is good advice for everyone; but for business owners, being prepared to respond to the aftermath of natural or man-made disasters can literally mean the difference between staying in business and closing the doors forever. According to FEMA*, up to 40 percent of businesses never reopen following a major disaster; just a couple of inches of water can cause thousands of dollars of damage.

SERVPRO of West Akron has a Preparedness planning tool that can help you know exactly who to call and what to do when disaster strikes. I will work with you on your individualized Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) for your facility, at no charge. This comprehensive document contains critical information about your building, including emergency contact information, shut-off valve locations and priority areas. Having this information in hand helps you and SERVPRO to react to an unexpected event quickly and effectively, to help minimize business interruption. And, because disasters are unexpected, there is a Smartphone app and web version of the Program available to provide you with access to your ERP 24/7. Call SERVPRO of West Akron to set up an appointment to discuss this in more detail at 330-867-5723.

Supply Line Leaks Can Cause Major Damage to Your Home

8/23/2016 (Permalink)

Refrigerator Leak

If you think about water damaging your home, you might conjure up an image of a hurricane, torrential rain or other natural catastrophe. The unfortunate reality is that damage that is caused when ordinary household appliances fail can be just as destructive as an extreme weather event. To prevent damage to your home it is important to stay on top of any and all maintenance around the house. Whether that is cleaning out your gutters or replacing old plumbing around the house, keeping up to date with these things can help prevent possible water damage in your home.

Supply lines are water lines that connect toilets, sinks, washing machines, icemakers and dishwashers to the shut off valves. Oftentimes, supply lines are overlooked when it comes to maintenance and upkeep of a home. However, this is can be a huge mistake for homeowners. When supply lines are not regularly checked and replaced, the possibility for water to damage the home is very likely.

We recently went on a call in Akron Ohio to a home that had a refridgerator line that had a leak. Unfortunately, the leak had been been dripping for several weeks causing damage being the kitchen cabinets and the hard wood floors. We received the call from the homeowner and our production manager, Jesse Lee, was able to assess the water damage and dispatched one of our crew teams to the home to begin the water damage clean up.

When a supply line in your home malfunctions and creates water damage in your home, it is best to call a professional water damage company – like SERVPRO of West Akron– to remediate the damage. We have the experience and proper equipment to make sure that any and all forms of water damage are completely removed from your home. After we show up, it will look as if there was never any water damage in the first place!

Watch vs Warning: What's the Difference

8/12/2016 (Permalink)

Definition of Watch vs Warning during a storm announcement

Watch vs Warning: What's the Difference

With the severe weather season underway, now is a good time to go over the difference between tornado and severe thunderstorm watches and warnings. Similarly, a severe thunderstorm watch means that conditions are just conducive for the development of severe weather, and DOES NOT indicate that severe weather has been reported. While no immediate action on the part of the general public is required for the issuance of a watch, citizens should keep up to date on the current weather situation and be prepared to seek shelter if necessary.

A tornado warning can be thought of as a very specific severe thunderstorm warning, and means that a tornado has been either spotted by a human observer or indicated by doppler radar to a severe thunderstorm warning, once a tornado warning is issued for your area, you should take cover immediately...as the likelihood of you being directly impacted by a tornado is at a heightened risk. With this knowledge of watches and warnings, you will be better prepared the next time severe weather threatens your area.

Severe storms can cause water damage!

7/25/2016 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of West Akron if your house gets damage by water damage due to a storm - 330-867-5723!

SEVERE STORMS CAN CAUSE WATER DAMAGE TO YOUR HOME!

Severe weather can happen any time, anywhere. Each year, Americans cope with an average of the following intense storms:

  • 10,000 severe thunderstorms
  • 5,000 floods or flash floods
  • 1,000 tornadoes
  • 2 land falling deadly hurricanes

Approximately 98 percent of all disasters declared emergency by the President are weather related leading to around 500 deaths a year and nearly $15 billion in damage.  Knowing your risk of severe weather, taking action and being an example are just a few steps you can take to be better prepared to save your life and assist in saving lives of others.

Know Your Risk: The first step to becoming weather ready is to understand the type of weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather can impact you, your business, and your family.  Check the weather forecast regularly, obtain a weather radio, and learn about Wireless Emergency Alerts.  Severe weather comes in many forms and your shelter plan should include all types of local hazards.

Take Action: Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a communication plan for your home and business. Put together or purchase an emergency kit. Keep important information and valuables in safe place.

Be an Example: Once you have taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with co-workers and family and friends on Facebook or twitter.  Your preparedness story will inspire others to do the same.

After severe weather has damaged your home by water damage from flooding, sewage back up or sump pump back up, please call SERVPRO of West Akron for your clean up and restoration. 330-867-5723

SERVPRO of West Akron are Green Cleaners

The 7 Biggest Benefits of Hiring a Green House Cleaner

It may seem like a luxury to hire a house cleaner, but when it comes to keeping your house spotless and sparkling, a professional can not only make sure everything is dirt and grime-free from top to bottom (including baseboards and ceiling fans), but can give you time back that you’d typically spend scrubbing toilets and washing windows. Even better, if you hire a green cleaner, you’re also doing your part to be environmentally responsible and take care of the earth. Read on to find out the benefits of hiring a house cleaner that’s planet-friendly and how it’s actually quite easy to be green (despite what that charming frog says).

1. Green Cleaning Is Safer for Your Family and Pets

Certainly there are times when one needs to disinfect an area (like on surfaces that have had contact with raw meat or when someone has a contagious illness), but the chemicals in disinfectants can trigger asthma, allergies, and create other health issues. Exposure to living bacteria is actually good for us and according to some research may actually strengthen immune systems. Mostly though, by cleaning with products that don’t contain toxins, pollutants, or suspected carcinogens such as VOCs, solvents, chlorine, ammonia, sulfates, or irritating dyes and perfumes, you’re making sure your children and pets are living and thriving in a healthy and safe environment.

2. Green Cleaners Don’t “Green Wash”

Green cleaners wash your home in a green way, but they don’t “green wash,” meaning they won’t deceive you about the products they’re using to clean your home. If they say they’re using eco-friendly products and practices, then they really are. This means they’ll also be honest about which organic products are most effective and won’t tell you they’re disinfecting if they’re not.

3. Green Products Are Better for Your Health

Most common household cleaners contain toxic chemicals that can have an adverse affect on your health, which is why the biggest advantage giving your home an eco-friendly cleaning is that everything will be cleaned with all-natural products. There are tons of household cleaners that can keep your home fresh and clean that are non-toxic, biodegradable, and made from renewable resources. That being said, it’s true that sometimes it can take a little more time and elbow grease to get green products to work because they’re much more gentle than chemical products. Chemicals may make cleaning easier, but they don’t make it any better. Still, green products won’t disinfect and kill bacteria the way traditional cleaning products do, so if that’s important to you, it’s something to think about. Though it’s also worth nothing that it’s not necessary to kill bacteria on a surface, just to remove it, which green products will do.

4. Green Cleaners Provide the Products

In order to ensure your home is being cleaned with non-toxic and environmentally friendly products, most green cleaners provide all of the cleaning equipment and products, though they will use your products if you ask them to.

5. Green Cleaners Are Committed to Being Green in All Areas

While using green house cleaning products is a huge part of taking care of the earth, green cleaners know it goes further than just that and make an effort to save water, reuse bottles, reduce waste, and implement sustainable business practices.

6. Green Cleaning Is Also Safer for the People Doing the Cleaning

A sustainable cleaning philosophy means that cleaners are not exposed to toxic chemicals that could adversely affect their health.

7. Green Cleaners Will Save You Time

Okay, this is true of any house cleaner, but it’s still worth mentioning. Whether you live in an apartment or a house, a green cleaner is saving you the time and effort it takes to keep everything looking its best. And they will clean on a schedule that works for you, whether that’s once a week or once a month. In addition, by taking care of your home and providing regular maintenance, you’ll save money in the long run.

SERVPRO of West Akron Smoke and Soot Clean up

6/21/2016 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Summit County Home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of West Akron will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Cold Weather Pipe Break

2/4/2016 (Permalink)

Water frozen from a pipe break.

We recently were called out to a pipebreak in Akron. When our Production Manager opened the garage door this is what he found. A pipe had broken on the second floor of an apartment complex and the garage was underneath. The water flowed through each floor level and froze once it hit the cold in the gargage.

Prepare your Home for Holiday Travel

12/22/2015 (Permalink)

Happy Holidays!
