Tornado Watch vs Warning - Be Prepared!

8/26/2021 (Permalink)

Clouds Sky SERVPRO crews are here to help cleanup and restore your home after a storm in Ohio.

One of the scariest sounds to hear during a storm is the tornado siren. Its best to prepare now before the next severe weather to keep you and your family safe. Follow these guidelines to know what to do before, during and after a tornado comes through your neighborhood.

Before

Having an emergency plan and practicing it is critical. Make sure everyone in your household knows where to go and what to do. And do not forget about your pets! Have a crate or leash in an easily accessible place in case you need to help them move to safety.

Make an emergency supply kit with non-perishable foods, water, blankets, an emergency kit, batteries, weather radio, flashlights, and important documents.

Secure your home with storm shutters to prevent windows from breaking. Also, garage doors tend to get damaged during tornadoes, so ensure yours are sturdy and durable enough to resist violent winds.

Tornado Watch vs Warning

If there is a tornado watch, a tornado is possible, so keep a close eye on your local weather station for updates. Stay attentive to the changing of the weather. Pick up and remove any loose items and debris outside of your home.

During a tornado watch, the following could signal a possible tornado:

  • Dark-greenish clouds
  • Thunderstorms
  • Hail
  • Debris
  • Consistent rotation in cloud base

tornado warning means that a tornado is already occurring or will be soon. If you were alerted by the sound of an alarm or by a weather station, stay inside and take cover in the interior or lower part of your home. Stay away from windows, doors, and outside walls. A tornado can rip through your neighborhood in a matter of seconds, so do not risk your life by going out

If you have a smart phone, it is extremely easy to follow along with warnings or watches in your area. If you do not have access to a smart phone or tablet, listen to the radio or watch your local news station for updates.

During

If you are at HOME: Find the safest part of your home which is usually a storm cellar, basement, or a room on the lowest floor with no windows. If you are in a tall building and do not have time to get to the lowest floor, go to the center of a hallway. If you are in a mobile home, get out and find the nearest sturdy building.

If you are in your CAR: If a tornado hits and you are in a car, try to find the nearest building or shelter. If this is not an option, get out, find a ditch, and cover your head; or stay in the vehicle, buckle-up, put your head down and cover it.

After

After the tornado, remember to keep children and pets away from any damage or debris outside of your home. If you see any downed power lines, stay away from them, and report them to your utility company. If you experienced any damage to your home, call your insurance company to file a claim and then your local SERVPRO.

If you experience water or storm damage and need help with clean up and restoration, call us SERVPRO of West Akron your local franchise company. Our team has the expertise and fully IICRC trained in water cleanup and restoration. We are available 24 hours a day at 330-867-5723.

Water Damage from a Storm? Here are a Tips to Prevent Water Damage

7/23/2021 (Permalink)

gutters house leaves Clogged gutters can cause water damage to your basement from severe rainstorm. Call us if you need water cleanup and restoration at 330-867-5723.

Wake up to water in your basement from a storm? The first thing to check for is surface water draining down next to the foundation walls. Water coming in at one location or only at the exterior foundation wall indicates surface water problems.

Here are some things to look for once you get outside.

  • Overflowing gutters: Keeping gutters clean of debris should be cleaned out a few times a year. Check your downspouts to make sure the water has proper drainage away from your home. Even if the water is not getting into the basement, it could be eroding soil from under the house footings, which can lead to cracking of walls and ceilings.
  • Downspout distance: Downspouts should extend 10 feet from your home. While many homeowners do not like downspouts extending out this far, 10 feet is the minimum distance needed to discharge water coming off your roof far enough away from the house.
  • Pavement slope: Sometimes paving settles over time and water flow can change direction toward the house. If this is the case, the paving should be removed and replaced so it slopes away from the home.
  • Sealant: Sealant around pavement that borders the house sometimes cracks over time due to age or incorrect installation. If the sealant is cracked, it must be removed and replaced with new sealant.
  • Landscape slope: Have your yard around your home slope away from the foundation.
    • Look for any depressions in the ground next to the foundation walls. If any are found, fill in with dirt so the water drains away from the house. Use a clay-type soil that sheds water instead of sandy soil that allows water to soak into the ground. Make sure that at least eight inches is kept between the top of the earth and any wood or stucco on the house.
    • If there are large hills nearby sloping toward your home, and you think they may be causing the problem, a civil engineer may be required to analyze the situation and determine the appropriate solutions.
  • Irrigation: Avoid placing lawn irrigation next to the house. If this can’t be avoided, instruct the installer to limit the amount of water dispersed next to the house. Make sure the irrigation system includes a working rain gauge, so the system does not turn on when there has already been plenty of rain for the plants and lawn.

Handling water damage from a storm can be a devastating ordeal for a homeowner. If you have experienced an unexpected form of disaster from a storm such as water damage to your basement or storm damage to your roof, then please feel free to contact one of the experts at SERVPRO of West Akron today. Water cleanup may seem like a near impossible task for some circumstances, however, it does not necessarily have to be if you make the decision of contacting the right restoration company.

Water Damage After A Storm

9/4/2019 (Permalink)

A tree has fallen on a roof after a storm in Akron, Ohio. Our crews had to tarp a roof from a fallen tree after a severe storm hit Akron, Ohio.

A severe storm can produce large hail, severe wind and heavy rainfall and leave your home with water and structural damage. A tree branch that has fallen during a storm onto your roof can cause major damage. Not only to your roof, but rain can cause water damage to the inside. When the sun pops back out and the walls are drying nicely, or so you think, the moisture within is causing damage and overtime this can create a mold problem. When rain gets into your attic it can make its way into the walls or ceilings of your home. It doesn’t take long for mold to grow in dark and hidden areas. Moisture in the right environment can cause mold spores to start rapidly spreading within 48 hours, affecting air quality. To make sure that the water that has entered your home is completely gone it is relative to call a professional water restoration company to assess the damage.  Even if you believe you have soaked up the water, the area might still be wet underneath. Moisture detection equipment is imperative for hidden water in structural materials. Our SERVPRO of West Akron crews are equipped with moisture meters to detect where there is still moisture. We can identify all affected areas to prevent future damage. We will then place drying equipment to completely dry out your structure.

Storm Watch vs Warning Forecast in Akron, Ohio

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

A severe storm in Akron Ohio damaged this home.

Storm Watch versus Storm Warning

In our daily routine we check the weather forecast. Sometimes, that forecast will prepare us for storms that maybe developing and we continue to watch the news in case something severe develops. We hear the terms Storm Watch and Strom Warning on TV, but what really is the difference between a storm watch vs a storm warning?

Knowing what weather terms mean can help you prepare your home and family for any type of weather event.  The best time to learn them is before any emergency happens.

A WATCH means that the potential exists for the development of severe thunderstorms or tornadoes, depending upon the specific type of watch issued. In the case of a tornado watch, this DOES NOT mean that a tornado has been seen or even indicated on radar...it just means that conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes in thunderstorms. Similarly, a severe thunderstorm watch means that conditions are just conducive for the development of severe weather and DOES NOT indicate that severe weather has been reported. While no immediate action on the part of the general public is required for the issuance of a watch, citizens should keep up to date on the current weather situation and be prepared to seek shelter if necessary.

This is a great time to prepare your house if forecasts are calling for a strong storm.

  • Tie down or bring in outdoor items that can go airborne.
  • Clean out your gutters to prevent water from pooling on your roof.
  • For serious storms, consider boarding up your windows.
  • If a possible tornado is on its way, make sure your safe room is ready.

A WARNING, on the other hand, requires more immediate action and should be taken seriously. A severe thunderstorm warning indicates that severe weather is imminent in your area or is already occurring (based on either human observation or doppler radar). The term severe refers to hail greater than or equal to 1.00" in diameter and/or wind gusts that meet or exceed 58 mph. Although these storms can also be associated with dangerous cloud to ground lightning or heavy rainfall that is capable of causing flash flooding, neither of these two items serve as criteria for a severe thunderstorm warning being issued.

What do I do if severe weather is coming?

  • Have a plan for immediate shelter in your home for your family and pets.
  • It is possible to loose electricity during severe storms. Be prepared by charging your cell phone and have a battery operated weather radio.
  • Be prepared by having all emergency documents in a water/fire proof safe, first aid kit, bottle water and food,
  • Prepare your home by tying down any outside furniture, trampolines, grills, flower pots, etc.
  • If a possible tornado, consider boarding up your windows.

If you need storm damage cleanup and restoration, please call SERVPRO of West Akron 24/7/365 at 330-867-5723!

September is National Preparedness Month: “Disasters happen, prepare now, learn how”

Local SERVPRO disaster recovery specialist offers Akron property owners tips for preparing for, surviving, and recovering from the unexpected

Akron, OH (Grassroots Newswire) August 28, 2018 - Local disaster restoration specialist Laurel Kolenz & Maureen Gentile, owners of SERVPRO® of West Akron, reminds Akron property owners that September is National Preparedness Month. This annual event, sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), provides families and businesses with the information and resources they need to plan for, react to, survive, and recover from an emergency, before the emergency happens. (https://www.ready.gov/september)

For National Preparedness Month 2018, themed “Disasters happen, prepare now, learn how,” FEMA has prepared a week-by-week calendar of recommended actions property owners can take to be ready if disaster does strike:

Week 1. Create an emergency plan that includes signing up for emergency alerts and making contingency plans for shelter, evacuation, and family communication.

Week 2. Learn life-saving skills. CPR is a good place to start, but also be certain you know how to turn off the utilities in your home and ensure your smoke and CO detectors are properly installed and working.

Week 3. Check your insurance coverage. Once the emergency is over, appropriate and sufficient insurance will be key to getting your life back to normal, or at least on track.

Week 4. Plan financially for the possibility of a disaster. This goes beyond having a “rainy day fund” for immediate needs. Gather and organize important home, business, insurance, financial, and personal documents and keep them up-to-date and stored in a secure, water-and-fire proof location.

“There’s a difference between surviving a disaster and recovering from a disaster,” says Kolenz. “Families and businesses who take the time to create both a short- and long-term plan to deal with the unexpected are better able to respond quickly if the unexpected happens, which can improve their chances of survival. Having key information at their fingertips in the aftermath of the emergency can set them on the path to recovery more quickly and with less stress.”

Because SERVPRO recognizes a fast response is critical in any emergency, Kolenz reminds Akron-area commercial and residential property owners they can download the SERVPRO READY app for free at https://ready.SERVPRO.com/home/mobileapp. The app allows users to store essential contact and property information electronically, where it can be accessed with a mobile device in seconds, right from the scene, if disaster strikes. For local business owners who designate SERVPRO of West Akron as their disaster mitigation and restoration provider, SERVPRO professionals will conduct a no-cost assessment of their facility, help the owner complete a comprehensive Emergency READY Profile® (ERP), and store that profile in the READY app.

“SERVPRO disaster cleanup and restoration specialists are ready to respond to emergencies big and small,” said Kolenz. “From SERVPRO’s Disaster Recovery Team, a group of elite large-loss specialists, prequalified and strategically positioned throughout the United States to handle any size disaster, to local SERVPRO professionals like SERVPRO of West Akron, we specialize in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping make it ‘Like it never even happened’ for both commercial and residential customers.”

Flooding Preparation During Winter Weather Storms

1/11/2018 (Permalink)

Water in a basement in Akron from flooding.

During the changes in weather from snow to rain in Akron, Ohio there is a potential of flooding. Here are a few ways you can prepare for potential flooding:

  • Check with your local council about local flood plans or records which detail problem areas
  • Ask authorities about relocation routes and centers
  • If your area is flood prone consider alternatives to carpets
  • Prepare an emergency kit
  • Prepare a household flood plan
  • Keep a list of emergency telephone numbers on display
  • Check your insurance policy to see if you are covered for flood damage?

It is important to contact a restoration company within the first 24 hours of a flooded home or business, so we can fully restore your home or business to its pre-flood damage condition. However, waiting more than 48 hours to begin the restoration and flood damage mitigation process increases the chance that the flooded home or business will incur damage. Call SERVPRO of West Akron at 330-867-5723 for immediate assistance to clean up and restore your home or business from water damage caused by flooding.

Winter Storm Damage Tips

11/30/2017 (Permalink)

Pipe Break in a garage from a winter storm.

As the weather outside gets frightful and your home becomes cozy and delightful the holiday season's aglow the snow begins to blow. It is very important to be prepared for when winter weather strikes at your home, business or even traveling. Here are some great tips:

7 Tips to Get Your Home Ready for Cold Weather

  1. Protect Your Pipes:
  • Drain water from outdoor faucets and sprinkler systems to keep those pipes from freezing.
  • Disconnect and store outdoor hoses; cover outdoor faucets with foam insulators.
  • Protect water pipes that run through unheated areas of your home with insulation, such as the attic, basement, or garage.
  1. Check the Heat:
  • Change your furnace filter at the start of the season and then every two to four months. Filters get dirty much more quickly if your home is dusty or if you have furry or feathery pets. Clogged or dirty filters are less efficient, which means your home might not warm up properly.
  • Consider installing a programmable thermostat if you don't have one. Programming it to be cooler at night and when you're not at home will save you money, and you can program it to be warmer for when you return or get up on cold winter mornings.
  1. Prevent Ice Dams
  • Clogged gutters and downspouts are the No. 1 cause of ice dams. Clean them out to keep water flowing during the winter.
  • Seal places that may allow warm air to leak from your home to your attic, such as around vent pipes, exhaust fans, chimneys, attic hatches and light fixtures.
  • Clean off soffit vents which are along the eaves of the house that allow air to flow into the attic.
  1. Clean and Store Lawn Equipment:
  • Clean the machine of oil and yard debris and sharpen the blades.
  • Store them for winter in a basement, garage, or covered storage shed where they're safe from the weather.
  1. Inspect the Fireplace and Chimney
  • Make sure fireplace and chimney are clean and animal free.
  • Close flue when you are not using your fireplace to prevent cold air coming into home from chimney.
  • Install glass glass fireplace doors or a chimney inflatable that blocks cold air from coming down the chimney and keeps in warm air.
  1. Seal Windows and Doors:
  • Caulk around windows and install weather stripping around doors where there are gaps.
  • Upgrading to double-pane windows and insulated doors to boost the energy efficiency of your home.
  1. Stock Up on Cold-weather Essentials:
  • Make an emergency kit for when a severe storm hits.
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Alternative heat source
  • Shovel or icemelt, salt or sand
  • Family plan of action in case you aren’t together when a winter storm hits.

Stay warm, save money and prevent damage to your home from cold and snow with these simple steps.

September is National Preparedness Month!

Each September, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sponsors National Preparedness Month  (http://www.ready.gov) to highlight the importance of being prepared for the unexpected. This is good advice for everyone; but for business owners, being prepared to respond to the aftermath of natural or man-made disasters can literally mean the difference between staying in business and closing the doors forever. Watch vs Warning: What's the Difference

8/12/2016 (Permalink)

Definition of Watch vs Warning during a storm announcement

Watch vs Warning: What's the Difference

With the severe weather season underway, now is a good time to go over the difference between tornado and severe thunderstorm watches and warnings. Similarly, a severe thunderstorm watch means that conditions are just conducive for the development of severe weather, and DOES NOT indicate that severe weather has been reported. While no immediate action on the part of the general public is required for the issuance of a watch, citizens should keep up to date on the current weather situation and be prepared to seek shelter if necessary.

A tornado warning can be thought of as a very specific severe thunderstorm warning, and means that a tornado has been either spotted by a human observer or indicated by doppler radar to a severe thunderstorm warning, once a tornado warning is issued for your area, you should take cover immediately...as the likelihood of you being directly impacted by a tornado is at a heightened risk. With this knowledge of watches and warnings, you will be better prepared the next time severe weather threatens your area.
